Fizz is an essential part of Christmas Day, and, let's be honest, the weeks in the lead up to the big day, too. While Champagne makes the ultimate toast, the high cost can sometimes make it seem like a celebration too far.

The good news is that you don't have to take out a second mortgage to drink well this Christmas, as the Co-op has has just been named Which? Best Buy for its own-brand Champagne.

Proving that you can get your hands on top-class fizz for under £20, the supermarket's Les Pionniers NV Champagne was awarded the highest score of 78 percent after being judged by sommeliers, wine experts and writers from around the world.

Described by the Which? team as 'elegant and well-balanced', with intense flavour 'reminiscent of honeycomb and nectarines', the fizz is on sale for an affordable £19.

Proving just how good it is, the Co-op's fizz was joint first with Mumm's Cordon Rouge Brut NV Champagne, which also scored 78 percent and retails for a pricier £35.

Narrowly missing out on the top spot was Moët et Chandon Imperial Brut NV Champagne (£34), getting a rating of 77 percent. Other supermarket in the running for the Which? Best Buy award were Aldi, Lidl, M&S, Sainsbury's, Spar, Morrisons, Tesco and Waitrose.
