This Super-Simple Hack Helps You Pick Out A Perfectly Ripe Avocado

The avocado section of a supermarket or greengrocers is minefield, quite frankly. Like, there are some avocados that are so ripe they’re practically baby food inside. Then there are the ones that probably won’t ripen up for another year and a half. Why is it so hard to find the most perfectly ripe avocado for our avocado toast?!

Talk about first-world problems…

Anyway the point is, being able to tell if an avocado is ripe is harder than it should be.

But luckily for us, this hack has shown us exactly what we should be looking for when picking out an avocado.

Thanks to @mommylifesquad on TikTok, we now know that the key to the perfect avocado is the, erm, cap? The bit at the top of the thin end. Is that called a cap? Well, that’s what @mommylifesquad is calling it, so we’re sticking with that.

So, all you have to do is take the cap off the avocado. If it’s white underneath, that means it’s rotten. If it’s brown, it’s about to go bad. But if it’s green, that means you’ve got the perfect avocado!

But what should you do if you’ve got an avocado at home that’s as hard as a boulder and needs ripening up quickly?

Food stylist Georgia Levy recently explained how to ripen avocados quickly.

She said: “Speed up the ripening process by keeping them in a paper bag at room temperature to concentrate the ethylene gas they emit. Further accelerate it by adding another fruit like bananas to the bag - they’ll all happily ripen each other. Once ripe, the flesh will yield to a gentle squeeze.”
