Crossing the lobby to check-in to the London Edition in the heart of bustling Fitzrovia, we couldn’t help but sigh with relief at the scene in front of us – London looking “back to normal”.

Of course, masks were still being worn, but otherwise, the ultra-cool entrance to this former townhouse, with its vast stainless-steel orb centrepiece, was buzzing with life. The Lobby Bar was full and looked like an excellent spot for a tempting pre-dinner tipple. There was even a pool table, for those with a competitive streak. It was immediately clear that this is a hotel that places design at the forefront.

We were quick to take advantage of the hotel’s new “Unwind and Dine” package. On check-in, a room upgrade is guaranteed, you are granted dining credit at the Lobby Bar and Berners Tavern, plus a complimentary breakfast for two and early check-in/late check-out (available upon request) – all making for the perfect city staycation.

There are 173 rooms in the hotel and our suite had a chic urban aesthetic, with wooden furniture, exquisite artworks and a glorious selection of coffee-table books to peruse. Bathrooms are stocked with amenities from Le Labo, and they come with impressive rainforest showers and huge bathtubs.

Downstairs, Berners Tavern awaits – a restaurant famed for having the Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton at its helm. The spacious hall wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home, thanks to its opulent design, flickering candles, dramatic lighting and walls covered in gold-framed canvases. As we raised a glass, we studied the menu of contemporary and seasonal British dishes, before sampling a decadent mac and cheese, topped with a choice of braised beef blade or lobster. Service was the best we’ve experienced since re-entering the world of fine dining, and the crowd was jolly and dapper. Even better, a signed copy of Jason Atherton’s cookbook is given to guests at check-out to help you continue your culinary journey at home.

Be sure to visit the Punch Room during your stay – the hotel’s standout bar, inspired by London’s 19th-century private clubs. It is dark and moody, and the ideal spot for a nightcap. As suggested by its name, the menu lists an array of delicious and complex punches with stellar service (we would highly recommend the Sage Advice cocktail).

After a blissful night of sleep, we enjoyed the à la carte breakfast, which you can eat in Berners Tavern, but we chose to have it in bed for the pure indulgence of a lie-in. If you stay an extra night, the hotel will reserve a table at Jason Atherton’s nearby restaurants, Pollen Street Social or Social Eating House, and include a complimentary glass of champagne to get you started.

Although there is plenty to keep you busy at the hotel, if you fancy a wonder, Fitzrovia is a lively neighbourhood to do so, with galleries galore and plenty of London charm.
