It's no secret that slingbacks are my favourite type of shoe. Why? Because there are very few outfits that can't be improved by a little kitten-heel lift and a flattering pointed toe, while retaining that 'effortless' coolness.

Slingbacks have year-round appeal, too, thanks to the heel strap, meaning they can work with ribbed socks in winter and be worn solo come summer. Whether you wear them to make up an everyday jumper and jeans feel more polished, or to elevate a holiday dress for the city, a slingback can do it all.

Trending in fashion circles yet also totally timeless, if you're looking for a more unexpected ways to style slingbacks this spring/summer, take inspiration from some of my most-worn outfit combinations, below:

One styling tip to steal is the 'slingbacks and socks' combo. This simple addition is a fashion insider trick for taking any outfit to a stylish new level. Not only is it an easy way to master transeasonal dressing and get early wear out of this more summer-friendly shoe, but it's also a relatively cheap hack (just the price of a new pair of socks) for feeling like you've just bought a new pair of shoes.

The key to getting this look right lies in pairing your slingbacks and socks with longer pieces like dresses, skirts and trousers (or even just a long duster coat); this keeps your outfit more elegant than preppy. I love to team a sparkly pair of socks and a slick slingback with a black suit for the perfect evening ensemble.

From A-line to pencil, midi skirts have already shown their versatility on the catwalks over the past few seasons, working with transeasonal trends from sporty rugby shirts to preppy cardigans. Slingbacks retain the elegance of these skirt shapes without making them feel too prim, as well as making legs look longer thanks to their lack of any kind of ankle straps, which can shorten a silhouette.

If you never know quite what shoes to wear with heavy-duty trousers such as cargo and parachute pants to still feel elegant, then slingbacks are the answer. A pointed toe gives an elongating silhouette where trainers and flat shoes fall short, and are much more practical for everyday wear than a court shoe. Colours like white and buttery yellow are a great palette cleanser to keep khaki and olive shades feeling fresh as summer comes.
