There can be some real gems found in charity shops.

From luxury homewear to antique jewellery and designer clothing, there are plenty of goodies to be uncovered if you put the work in. It can also be much more satisfying than going to the regular shops – and better for your bank balance too!

So with that being said, a woman called Jess was delighted to find a Ralph Lauren jumper hanging up in a thrift store recently. It was worth almost £200 and had a very cosy vibe that would have been perfect for autumn.

It was XL in size, but she thought she could still make it work. Everything was going well until she stuck it in the washing machine – making an error that completely wrecked the designer purchase.

On TikTok, Jess admitted: "I accidentally put it in the washing machine". She "forgot it was in there", which led to it shrinking loads. She held the shrunken garment up to her body and exclaimed: "Look at it, for context, I'm four foot 11."

Jess wondered whether she'd "still get away with wearing it" as a "cute cropped knit" because it looked more like her actual size now it had shrunk in the wash.

But ultimately, she felt "dense and horrible" for ruining the item that felt like "gold dust" in her hands. She did have a positive spin on the situation though joking: "I think I'm going to donate it and some grateful three-year-old can wear it."
