A 'Strong Coffee' 30 Mins Before a Workout Could Increase Fat-Burn, New Study Finds

With the power to ward off heart disease and to allow your cells to become more sensitive to hormones such as adrenalin, all while you become far more personable, a steaming cup of coffee is far more than just a morning pick-me-up.

Add to this list that a cup of coffee, when consumed approximately 30 minutes before a workout, could increase fat-burning, and dropping £2.50 on a flat white doesn't seem like such a stretch.

Put the kettle on and allow us to explain. New research from scientists at the Department of Physiology at the University of Granada (UGR) found that around 3mg for every 1kg of body weight (the equivalent of a 'strong coffee') taken 30 minutes before aerobic exercise "significantly" improved the study participants' rate of fat-burning.

But what were they looking to prove? "The recommendation to exercise on an empty stomach in the morning to increase fat oxidation is commonplace. However, this recommendation may be lacking a scientific basis, as it is unknown whether this increase is due to exercising in the morning or due to going without food for a longer period of time," explained research lead author Francisco José Amaro-Gahete at the UGR's Department of Physiology.

Published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, the study examined a total of 15 men with an average age of 32-years-old and had them complete four exercise tests at seven-day intervals, with each subject taking 3mg per kg of caffeine or a placebo 30 minutes before each session.

"The results of our study showed that acute caffeine ingestion 30 minutes before performing an aerobic exercise test increased maximum fat oxidation during exercise regardless of the time of day," explained Amaro-Gahete. So to get the most potent fat-burn from your next steady-state workout, brew up an espresso beforehand.
