Spoilers follow for the fourth season of Stranger Things.

Stranger Things 4 introduced several new characters for viewers to fall in love with—we're looking at you, Eddie Munson and Argyle—but it also gave the show perhaps its creepiest, most loathsome villain yet in Vecna. Of course, this is Stranger Things, where body horror is par for the course, so naturally the evil telepathic creature who preys on the innermost fears and demons of his victims is just as monstrous on the outside.

And in a recent interview with Variety, the actor who plays Vecna revealed that at least one of his his fellow cast members was "visibly disgusted" by his grotesque prosthetics and costume.

Jamie Campbell Bower was first introduced this season as the mysterious One, only to then be revealed to be the grown-up Henry Creel who ultimately became the mutilated Vecna. That transformation involved a "second skin" of 25 separate pieces of latex and silicone, which would take over seven hours to apply.

And while filming one scene, he says, Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven, took a harrowing moment to realise who was behind the mask.

"They brought her up into a position where she’s bound," he said, most likely referring to the showdown between the two characters in the Season 4 finale. "I walked up to her [as Vecna] and she burst into tears. She wouldn’t look at me and she was visibly just disgusted by the whole thing... After she cried and I made it obvious that she knew it was me, one of the things she said was that, 'I knew it was you when I could smell cigarettes,’ because I’m a smoker."
