Stranger Things fans might be counting down the days until season four’s release date, but it sounds like there’s another reason to get excited this year.

During the Code Conference in Los Angeles on Tuesday, September 28 Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos teased that a Stranger Things spin-off might be on the cards.

'Franchises are good, but what you want are hits,' Sarandos said, noting that the hit Netflix series was 'a franchise being born.' Of course, the streaming platform head might have been referring to a range of Stranger Things-inspired successes, but his comments have certainly made us sit up.

It's worth noting that the CEO’s comments come almost a year after Deadline reported that a spin-off might be on the horizon and could star Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven in the show. At the time the reports were unconfirmed by Netflix and Brown.

Here’s everything we know about the rumoured Stranger Things spin-off:

What do we know about the rumoured Stranger Things spin-off?

At this stage, very little, as reports of a spin-off show are merely rumours.

In March several news publications reported that Brown had renewed her contract with Netflix, after signing up to star in Stranger Things for its first season, which debuted in 2016. However, the rumours have remained unconfirmed.

A Twitter fan account also shared rumours of a spin-off in May, noting: ‘The Spin Off would be focused on Eleven, right now it's just a rumour but it has been reported by several sources and there might be some truth to it, we'll need to wait to find out. [sic]'

Has Netflix confirmed Stranger Things season five?

On September 25 Netflix shared a teaser for season four and announced that it would be hitting our screens in November 2022.

As for a fifth season of the show, this is also yet to be confirmed (anyone else sensing a pattern here?) but in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter last August co-creator Ross Duffer noted: ‘Season 4 won't be the end [of Stranger Things]. We know what the end is, and we know when it is.

‘[The pandemic] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story.’

Members of the cast have also said that a fifth season is on its way.

‘I will tell you in Season 4 and in Season 5, if we’re ever able to film again, there is a lot to be revealed around the complexities of [Hopper’s] story, which is really rich, and I’m really excited for you to see,’ David Harbour (who plays Hopper) told Gold Derby.

‘Because we know the ending, you’ll be able to go back and watch it and see, you know, what we were planting in Season 3 that paid off in Season 4 and Season 5.’

What has Millie Bobby Brown starred in?

The British actor has starred in several TV series over the years including Modern Family and Grey's Anatomy, as well as films such as Enola Holmes and Godzilla vs. Kong.

The teenager has three films currently in pre-production: The Girls I've Been, The Thing About Jellyfish and Enola Holmes 2.
