The Story Behind This Rainbow-Themed Newborn Photoshoot Will Melt Your Heart
Losing a child is devastating, but for many parents, their "rainbow baby" (a child born after miscarriage or infant loss) is a light at the end of the tunnel. One family with not one but two rainbow babies found a beautiful way to celebrate their new children while paying tribute to the son they lost.
Cindy and Jim Bob Haggerton of Hurst, Texas lost their baby boy Evans on June 14, 2014, just a day before Father's Day. Evans was born 8 weeks early and diagnosed with Potter syndrome (a condition causing kidney failure), and he passed away only hours after he was born .
A year later, the couple adopted the first of their two rainbow babies, a little boy named Tate. Less than a year after that, Cindy gave birth to another son, Whitten. With two infants so close in age, the parents decided to include Tate in Whitten's newborn shoot, recruiting Natasha Hance of NHance Photography and Birth Unscripted to do the honors.
According to Popsugar, Hance had been present at all three of the boys' births. "When we did his newborn session we wanted to do something that would tie the three boys together," the photographer said. "So we did a rainbow with the two rainbow babies and a butterfly above them to represent their brother that was born the year before."
For Hance, the photo shoot represented closure. "We had documented each of the babies' births and then got to have the newborn session that honored all the baby brothers with this image," she told The Huffington Post.
The photo shoot took place a year ago, but has recently seen a sudden surge in popularity - which really isn't surprising, given the heartbreaking yet hopeful story behind it and just how damn cute the baby boys on their clouds of cotton are. "It was a long journey for their family," Hance told Parents.com. "So the image is a reminder of the many blessings that waited for them through their storm and that their sweet baby will never be forgotten."
