A shop manager was held in prison for a day with his staff doing their best to keep him there.

But Mike Bailey was not treated to a night on behalf of the taxpayer, instead he was in a makeshift cell in his store to raise money for animal rescue charity Wadars.

Mike was challenged by employees at The Original Factory in Rustington to spend his shift on March 18 inside a pop-up prison, with bail set at £500.

While Mike was doing porridge, staff were also collecting donations from customers and for every £25 they received, their manager said he would match it from his own pocket.

He spent the entire shift inside the metal crates, with the team raising £687.19 overall.

Once freed from his time behind bars, Mike said: “It was brilliant to see such a great turn out from the local community and we are happy to have helped raise money for our local charity partner, Wadars.

“I’m a free man. My time in jail was a swift one but I’d be happy to do it all over again for such a fantastic cause.”

Wadars, in Worthing, has been rescuing animals since 1969, and The Original Factory will continue to collect money for them through charity boxes in store.
