Steven Spielberg shares his verdict on Indiana Jones 5
Indiana Jones fans worried that the upcoming film will be anything less than great without Steven Spielberg at the helm can rest easy.
The Fabelmans director revealed he got to watch James Mangold's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny before the rest of us and absolutely loved it.
"I just had that experience two nights ago," Spielberg said at the Time 100 Summit about watching the first film in the franchise he didn't direct (via Variety).
"[Disney CEO] Bob Iger had a screening for a lot of the Disney executives, and I came to the screening along with the director James Mangold. Everybody loved the movie. It's really, really a good Indiana Jones film. I'm really proud of what Jim has done with it.
"When the lights came up I just turned to the group and said: 'Damn! I thought I was the only one who knew how to make one of these.'"
Having Spielberg's seal of approval is certainly a positive sign, given the Jurassic Park filmmaker directed the first four films in the saga led by Harrison Ford's archaeo-star.
Mangold himself previously addressed criticism of the film purely based on Spielberg's absence on Twitter, telling fans he understands Indy lovers being skeptical but assuring that he and his team were working hard to deliver a worthy sequel.
"Maybe, just maybe, I won't let you down. I cherish old Hollywood pictures," the director said. "Give me a little air to make the film. Then make your judgements, okay?"
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is scheduled for release on June 30, 2023.
