Stephen Hawking backs Corbyn - and says a Tory government would be a ‘disaster’

Professor Stephen Hawking has said that he’s backing Jeremy Corbyn – and says that another Conservative government would be ‘a disaster’.

Professor Hawking met with local Labour candidate Daniel Zeichner, and said, ‘I’m voting Labour because another five years of Conservative government would be a disaster for the NHS, the police and other public services.’

The scientist – who was diagnosed with incurable motor neurone disease at 21 – is a staunch defender of the NHS.

The announcement is something of a U-turn for Professor Hawking – who previously used the word ‘disaster’ to describe Corbyn himself.

Hawking previously said, ‘I regard Corbyn as a disaster. His heart is in the right place and many of his policies are sound, but he has allowed himself to be portrayed as a left wing extremist.’

Zeichner said, ‘I was delighted to meet Professor Hawking again and receive his support for my re-election and a Labour government.’
