Stephen Colbert turns Melania Trump’s RNC dress into ‘I’m with stupid’ T-shirt in blistering segment
Stephen Colbert turned Melania Trump’s dress into a green screen while covering the final night of the Republican National Convention.
The first lady walked onstage on Thursday night wearing the neon green garment and holding hands with her husband.
“That is so generous of her to provide the blank canvas – you can put anything in there!” Colbert said on his late show, after referring to the outfit as a “green screen dress”.
He ran through a series of options, each time with visuals to boot: “An ‘I’m with stupid’ T-shirt, Joe Biden, Stormy Daniels, the coronavirus, Black Lives Matter...”
Then, referring to the message inscribed on a jacket the first lady wore in June 2018 on her way to visit detained immigrant children in Texas, he added: “Whatever! I really don’t care, do you?”
In the same segment, Colbert reflected on the speech given by Ivanka Trump during the event at the White House, referring to her as the “White House senior daughter and American Girl Doll just following orders”.
He played a clip of the president’s daughter stating in her address: “Washington has not changed Donald Trump. Donald Trump has changed Washington.”
“She’s right, actually, and that’s weird,” Colbert mused. “The presidency proverbially changes the occupant. It matures them, it ages them.”
The host compared photos of Barack Obama before and after his presidency, pointing out the physical changes he experienced during that time.
“But Trump doesn’t do any of the stuff that matures you or ages you,” he added.
“Like worrying about the American people or feeling responsibility for protecting them, or evidently anything else.”
