When Meghan Markle stepped out at St George's Chapel on her wedding day, dressed in a Givenchy boat-neck white gown with a floral-embelished train, it's safe to say she undoubtedly looked the epitome of satorial royal elegance.

However, the Duchess of Sussex managed the near impossible when it comes to trumping bridal looks, by choosing to wear a flawless floor-length halter neck white dress designed by Stella McCartney for the evening reception at Frogmore House.

And while we thought Markle's choice of bridal wear came down to basic wardrobe preference, Stella McCartney just revealed there was a very important reason why the former actress chose such vastly different wedding looks on her big day.

Speaking to the BBC, the British fashion designer explained the white halterneck gown was 'the last moment' that the bride could reflect 'the human within her’.

‘When you come to a wedding you don't just go, here this is what you're wearing,' she revealed. 'That person has to feel like a million dollars, they need to feel like they own it.

‘The role that she's taken on is very austere, it's very serious and I think there's a great weight that she has acquired though that and I think she takes it very seriously.

'I think it was the last moment that she could reflect, sort of the other side to her and, you know... the joy, and the human within her.’

The Central Saint Martins graduate revealed she was determined to get the former Suits star's look for the evening reception perfect as it would be the Duchess of Sussex’s final appearance before taking on her 'very austere, very serious' role as a member of the royal family.

'I was aware that we had to get the right positioning, the right pace, the right voice. There was a delicate line.' She added: ‘It's either a thumbs up or a thumbs down, it’s that kind of gig.’

When it came to her role on the day, the star - who admitted her and Markle worked 'together' on the dress design - added: ‘It was very much her dress, and I felt very proud that she came to me for that part of the wedding, and that she got to reflect [herself] in it.’

The dress, described by Kensington Palace on the day as a ‘bespoke lily-white, high neck gown made of silk crepe’, was first spotted as the newlywed Duchess and her husband drove to their evening reception.

In addition to dressing Markle for the big day, McCartney also dressed Amal Clooney and Oprah Winfrey for the reception, saying she was surprised and ‘thrilled, obviously’ by the positive response from the public for her designs.
