Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue editor poses in a bikini to share an important message

Sports Illustrated‘s annual swimsuit issue is renowned for hosting impossibly gorgeous women in barely-there bikinis. But editor MJ Day has made it her mission to inspire a more diverse idea of beauty by putting herself on the front line.

In a video posted to Women In Real Life’s Instagram, the mom addresses her audience in a black bikini, with her two-year-old son at her hip, in a bid to celebrate all body types.

Day uses the platform to call for others to pose in their swimsuits and explain the traits and aspirations they “model” to others.

“We want to celebrate strength, beauty, and more,” she said. “I’m determined to get out the message that there’s not a singular definition of beauty.”

Sports Illustrated‘s Swimsuit Issue also made major stride towards in body/beauty diversity last year, featuring plus size model, Ashley Graham, on their cover in 2016. But in the Instagram video, the editor of 19 years says this year’s spread will be their most inclusive ever.

“This year’s issue will showcase the widest diversity of women in SI history. Women of all ages and shapes and from different backgrounds,” she said.

Day has since reposted the video to her own account, adding an empowering message about accepting body diversity not only in the pages of the magazine, but also in her own life.

“I really believe in this,” said Day in an interview with Yahoo News. “Along with the team at WomenIRL we hatched this idea together, and it’s born out of the belief that women do need to love themselves, and feel comfortable with how they are.”
