From Cosmopolitan

While the likes of San Francisco, Las Vegas and Sacramento are must-sees, no Californian road trip is complete without taking in some of the state's natural beauty. Once you've hiked your way around Yosemite, head to South Lake Tahoe for some rest and relaxation (and some noteworthy Mexican food).

Here's everything you need to know about visiting California's alpine lake in the summer, from where to stay, what to do, and the best places to eat and drink.

Where to stay in South Lake Tahoe

Coachman Hotel

South Lake Tahoe is full of motel and chalet style accommodation, and Coachman Hotel is our pick of the bunch. Newly renovated and close to the lake itself, the hotel is not only incredibly stylish and cool, but offers luxury touches that really make you feel like you're being looked after. We're talking free s'mores each evening, Malin and Goetz toiletries in the bathrooms, and a DIY waffle maker at breakfast. Yes yes and yes.

What to do in South Lake Tahoe

Head to the lake

What would a summer stay in South Lake Tahoe be without a visit to the lake? Lake Tahoe is beautiful, and offers sandy covers all around its shores - perfect for laying out your towels and getting some sunbathing in. If you're feeling a little more adventurous, water sports are definitely on the cards - Kayak Tahoe offer canoe and stand up paddle board rentals from $25 for the hour, while you can also join a guided tour to the Emerald Bay.

Go hiking

You know what we were saying about the natural beauty of Lake Tahoe? Head on a hike to take it all in. The Lam Watah historic trail is almost entirely flat and takes you on a leisurely stroll through the woodland, while the Rubicon Trail offers unrivalled views of the stunning lake and surrounding mountains. The trail from Eagle Falls to Eagle Lake is not one to miss, either.

Ride the MS Dixie II

If you want to spend time on the lake but don't feel like getting your feet wet (side note: it can be really cold), the MS Dixie II is perfect. Departing from Zephyr Cove and heading across the lake to Emerald Bay, the boat gives beautiful views across the crystal blue waters and towering peaks, as well as offering dinner and sunset cruising options.

Get a massage

Truly engage in some R&R with a massage during your stay. The Spa at Edgewood is a brilliant option; thanks to its year-round lakefront heated pool and hot tub, and 8,500 sq. ft. space that offers guests uninterrupted serenity amongst a peaceful and inviting atmosphere. Whether you're after an afternoon of finding your inner balance, a facial or body treatments, they'll have just the thing.

Where to eat in South Lake Tahoe

Azul Latin Kitchen

Azul Latin Kitchen is a must for Mexican food, brilliant margaritas and portions big enough to serve the masses. The salads feel healthy and filling, the burritos are astounding in size and there are enough tequila options to blow your socks off. Plus the offer to-go boxes, which is a big yes from us.

Ten Crows BBQ

Fancy an American feast? You won't leave Ten Crows BBQ hungry, thanks to the copious amounts of mac 'n' cheese, burgers, chicken wings and more on the menu. They also offer cocktails to boot and have a lovely little patio for hanging out and playing bean bag toss on (trust us, this is big in South Tahoe).

Cafe Fiore

A cozy wood-panelled Italian eatery with a lengthy wine list and enjoyable ambience; engage your more fancy side at Cafe Fiore. It's intimate and charming, and offers everything from calamari to pasta and meatballs.

Base Camp Pizza

Because what's a quiet and relaxing weekend without a pizza thrown in? Base Camp Pizza have great options for sharing, as well as fresh salads, and often have live music on during the day and evenings.

Things to note about South Lake Tahoe

  • Water sports on the lake are sadly quite weather dependent, so be sure to check in with the locals about whether it's safe for you to jump into a canoe.

  • Lime scooters are BRILLIANT for whizzing around South Lake Tahoe - just following the road regulations and wear a helmet!

  • America is big on tipping, and it's customary to do it everywhere you go. As a rough guide, you should try and leave 15-20% gratuity for seated service and $1/per drink for bar service, 15-20% on guided tours, and $1-$2 per day for hotel staff, such as housekeeping and the bellmen.
