This Sophisticated Trend Will Be Everywhere in 2020

Elinor Block

For a long time, pretty much ever since Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele came on the scene, fashion has been all about maximalism. Colours, patterns and textures were clashed more than ever before. Accessories needed to be loaded up, with glasses and chains all oversized. Shoes sparkled. If you looked like a granny-meets-vintage-shop-meets-70s-disco-style, then you’d nailed it. While there’s no denying that Gucci’s over-the-top playful fashion is sticking around, there’s a new minimalism in town for spring and summer 2020, and it’s of the ’90s variety.

First, however, one small note on minimalism in fashion. While it takes plenty of different forms, the general assumption is, in order to achieve the look your outfit needs to be black and white and very cleanly cut. While the latter is certainly true—you really do need to keep it super simple when it comes to silhouettes—the colour can be varied, which leads me to this trend: ‘90s minimalism. Think Gwyneth Paltrow at the Oscars in her pink Ralph Lauren gown or wearing that green cardigan and matching skirt by Donna Karan for the movie Great Expectations. Or just anything Kate Moss wore throughout the whole of the decade. These are the looks you want to reference when getting minimalism right for 2020.

The designers currently championing this trend will come as no surprise to die-hard fashion fans. Bottega Veneta, The Row, Prada, Gabriela Hearst, Loewe, and Victoria Beckham all showed pared-back looks on their respective runways for S/S 20. But you don’t have to wait for the new season pieces to drop; there are already plenty of ’90s minimalism-inspired to shop right now. Keep scrolling to see the runway looks and shop our edit too.
