Red Magazine's December cover star is the gorgeous Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and as well as spilling the beans on her career, motherhood and her royal connection (pardon?), she also gave us her secret to a long-lasting marriage. And because we're good people, we wanted to pass this sage advice on to you.

Marriage isn't easy, whether you're a celebrity or a mere mortal, and though we may have all the best intentions when we walk up the aisle, life does take it's toll. It isn't always a bed of roses, but when it's good, it's really good.

Sophie met her now-husband, Richard Jones, 17 years ago in a rehearsal room when Sophie was auditioning musicians for her band. They married three years later, in 2005, and now have five children together. So, what's their recipe for a long marriage?

'When I got married, my mum [Janet Ellis] said, “Be selfish about your marriage and if you have a choice about what to be doing with your time, pick doing something with Richard.” When you’re a mum, you feel guilty about everything. If we’re going to have a night out, it alleviates that feeling because sometimes you do need to go out and spend time with each other.'

We love it because it's so simple and intuitive, but choosing each other over and over again is such an important part of a relationship - and a marriage. Sometimes it's so easy to spend your spare time watching Downton Abbey reruns, but opting do something with your spouse is often much more fruitful.

Thanks, Sophie, for giving us relatable relationship advice that we can all use!
