Sophia Loren Explains Her Infamous Jayne Mansfield Side-Eye Moment

From Esquire UK

It was Sophia Loren's party, and she'll throw rival actress Jayne Mansfield the side-eye if she wants to.

The real story behind Loren's famously dirty look at a seemingly oblivious Mansfield - which remains one of the most iconic images in Hollywood history 60 years later - has finally been revealed.

And it would appear that the Italian Oscar-winning actress was not happy that blonde bombshell Mansfield attended her party and attempted to steal her thunder.

Back in 1957, Loren "had just signed a deal with Paramount and had come to California, and Paramount threw a big welcome party for her in Beverly Hills and Jayne Mansfield was on the guest list", People editor-in-chief, Jess Cagle, told the publication.

Loren recently explained what happened before the photograph was taken, telling EW: "She came right for my table. She knew everyone was watching. She sat down. And now, she was barely… Listen.

"Look at the picture. Where are my eyes? I'm staring at her nipples because I am afraid they are about to come onto my plate."

She added: "In my face you can see the fear. I'm so frightened that everything in her dress is going to blow-BOOM!-and spill all over the table."

In other photos taken of the evening, the pair can be seen courteously shaking hands and smiling, but Loren says this image is the only one that "shows how it was".

"There may be other photos, but this is the picture. This is the one that shows how it was. This is the only picture," the star explained.

And 60 years on, Loren is still signing copies of the image for fans , disclosing: "Many, many times I am given this photo to autograph.

"And I never do. I don't want to have anything to do with that. And also out of respect for Jayne Mansfield because she's not with us anymore [Mansfield died in 1967]."
