Someone did a DNA test on Subway chicken and found it is only 50% chicken

From Cosmopolitan UK

When you're ordering a chicken sandwich you may not know if it's going to come with lettuce, on brown or white bread, you might find that it has mayo in it, or maybe mustard but one thing you expect to be a constant across all your chicken sandwiches is the chicken.

Because chicken is chicken, right?

Well, according to one study into the chicken sold at Subway, that may not exactly be the case. In fact, a DNA test taken on the chicken sold in Subway subs found the meat to only consist of 50% chicken.

The research was undertaken in Canada by DNA researcher Matt Harnden for CBC Marketplace and looked at chicken from a variety of different fast food outlets.

After testing multiple products from each chain, CBC Marketplace found that Subway's oven-roasted chicken is only 53.6% chicken and even more worryingly, sweet onion chicken teriyaki strips are only 42.8% chicken. By contrast, McDonald's grilled chicken sandwich was found to contain 84.9% chicken DNA.

So what on earth is the other 50% we hear you ask? Well, the good news is that it's nothing gross - the study found that most of the remaining DNA present in the sample was soy.

In a statement, Subway has refused to confirm the results of the research, telling CBC: "SUBWAY Canada cannot confirm the veracity of the results of the lab testing you had conducted. However, we are concerned by the alleged findings you cite with respect to the proportion of soy content.

"Our chicken strips and oven roasted chicken contain 1% or less of soy protein. We use this ingredient in these products as a means to help stabilize the texture and moisture. All of our chicken items are made from 100% white meat chicken which is marinated, oven roasted and grilled.

"We tested our chicken products recently for nutritional and quality attributes and found it met our food quality standards. We will look into this again with our supplier to ensure that the chicken is meeting the high standard we set for all of our menu items and ingredients."

Subway UK have since released a statement regarding the research, too. They say: "All chicken at SUBWAY® stores in UK and Ireland is 100% chicken + spices and marinade. There is no soy".

The statement continues: "We know the results are inaccurate, and we are reviewing all of the information available."
