Sofia Vergara isn’t as secure without her clothes on as one might imagine. In a new interview with Women’s Health, Vergara poses in the buff — and opens up about life as a sex symbol after 40.
“I’m 45. Even if you want to, at this time in your life, you can’t be perfect,” Vergara admitted. “It’s not that you hate it, or that you’re upset about it, but it is our reality. We’re changing. I see it happening to me.”
The Modern Family star doesn’t strive to be something she’s not. “I want to look my age, but I want to look great. I think if you are obsessed with this ‘I want to look younger’ thing, you’re going to go crazy,” she said.
That mindset is part of the reason Vergara doesn’t have a “cut” six-pack. “I don’t have abs because I’m not ‘I need to be like a fit model with a perfect body.’ That would take too much effort!” She also finds exercise torturous. “I’m in a bad mood two hours before, I’m in a bad mood while I’m doing it, I’m in a bad mood at the end because I have to schedule the next class.” However, she did add that “Joe [Manganiello, her husband] built a very nice gym in the house, so I don’t have any excuses.”
But her age is partially why Vergara chose to forgo her clothes (and her trademark bold lip, which she says she wears even when she’s alone at home.) The pep talk it took for her to go nude is also the reason she thinks it’s important to do so. “Here’s a woman, 45, being able to show her body,” she said. “It’s not like before, when it was just young girls.”
Vergara may have also drawn inspiration (and confidence) from some of the other over-40 stars who’ve gone without their clothes. At age 57, Sharon Stone landed nude on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar. “I’m aware that my ass looks like a bag of flapjacks, but I’m not trying to be the best-looking broad in the world,” Stone said at the time. “At a certain point you start asking yourself, ‘What really is sexy?’ It’s not just the elevation of your boobs.”
Minnie Driver felt similarly to Vergara when she posed for Allure‘s annual nude series in 2014. “I never could have done this when I was 25 — no way,” the then 44-year-old said. “All I saw then were the flaws. I still see the flaws, but I see what’s great more — and I’ve got a banging body.” Nia Long, Taraji P. Henson, Debra Messing, and others all appeared in the publication unclothed too in their fifth decade.
With models of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds gracing magazine covers, the fashion world is inching closer to inclusivity. And if that movement just happens to include Sofia Vergara’s nude body, we’ll happily take it.
