Have your say: Do you understand the new social gathering rules?

After Boris Johnson announced a new restriction on social gatherings, the PM said he was keen to "simplify" the message.

The ‘rule of six’ means that groups of a maximum of six people will be permitted to meet up indoors or outdoors.

After the government were criticised for not making previous coronavirus guidelines clear, the prime minister has attempted to make the new message simpler.

Along with the rule of six, the introduction of COVID marshals was announced, while new penalties will also come into force from Monday.

However, there are several exemptions to the new rules, which the government have attempted to explain on their website.

Transport secretary Grant Shapps has also admitted that there is “no specific reason” why a maximum of six people was chosen as the limit for social gatherings.

Venues like pubs, restaurants, hairdressers and cinemas must also adhere to the new law – and must have a system in place by law to record contact details of their customers, visitors and staff by 18 September.
