A woman has revealed that she refused to support her sister’s ‘coming out’ party but not for the reason you may suspect.

Taking to Reddit to ask whether or not she did the right thing, the anonymous user explained that her 16-year-old sibling decided to throw a secret “special celebration” for her birthday in July.

But when she spoke to one of her sister’s close friends, it was revealed that she was busy planning a ‘coming out’ party.

“Normally I would have been happy and supportive, but she had been dating the same guy since she was 13, so I was confused,” the woman wrote. “I instantly became completely enraged, I thought it was so insincere and disingenuous. It just all came across as very attention-seeking and stupid.”

Though her sister’s friend disagreed, arguing that it was her job “as an LGBTQ+ ally to do her part and destigmatise coming out”.

But the woman refuses to celebrate the event, adding: “This seemed super disrespectful to me for what people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, everything else have to go through”.

“I feel like it's my job to let her know that what she's doing is wrong and taking advantage of a community that historically has been super duper taken advantage of,” she added. “But that doesn't seem to be the way that her friends are taking it. Am I in the wrong?”

Unsurprisingly, the post was met with backlash from fellow Reddit users who criticised her sister’s decision to throw a ‘coming out’ party.

“You can't ‘come out’ of closet you've never been in, especially when you're ‘coming out’ into the thing that everyone assumes you are anyway,” one argued. “No. This is just ‘I saw coming out parties on Instagram and I want one too’.”

Another strongly agreed, writing: “It’s not the ‘declaration of sexuality’ that needs to be normalised, it’s the existence and tolerance of non-heterosexuality that needs to be normalised.”

“I’m a queer woman and her straight ‘coming out’ party is the dumbest, most obnoxious thing I’ve ever heard of,” a third commented. “She’s treating this like it’s a fun party. It’s not. Coming out is f***ing terrifying because you risk a lot every time you do it.”

“I see what she’s trying to do, but she’s doing it the wrong way,” they concluded.

Do you think the sister made the right decision to boycott the controversial party?
