Simon Thomas has shared the sad news of his father Andrew's death at the age of 78.

The bereavement comes just two and a half years after the tragic passing of Thomas' wife Gemma who died in 2017, days after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.

The former Sky Sports host revealed the touching words his son Ethan, 10, said about his grandfather in a post to Instagram.

The 47-year-old presenter wrote: "Goodbye Dad. We will always love you. Perhaps the words of Ethan earlier this week sum it up best when I asked him how he was feeling about Grandpa being ill, he said this: 'I feel sad but Grandpa’s got lots to be proud of. Producing three beautiful children (definitely right on Becky and Hannah), got to marry and spend his whole life with lovely Grandma and spent his life serving God.'

"Farewell Dad. You were the absolute best. We love you xxx 16/12/41 - 29/05/20."

Thomas did not reveal the cause of his father's death.

The ex Blue Peter star has previously discussed the mental health struggles he faced after his wife's sad death aged just 40, which prompted him to experience suicidal thoughts.

Thomas explained how he was able to "keep going" because of his son.

He entered into a new relationship with Derrina Jebb in 2018 and has credited her with helping Ethan 'come to life'.

In a birthday tribute to his girlfriend earlier in May, Thomas wrote: "My life and my boy’s life has been massively blessed by her and she deserves all the love in the world because she’s a total one off."
