Shura Kitata wins the Virgin Money London Marathon

  • Four-time winner and world record holder, Eliud Kipchoge, seemed to struggle in the race and finished in eighth place.

In an amazing sprint finish, Ethiopian Shura Kitata crossed the finish line of the men's elite race at the Virgin Money London Marathon in 2:05:41, one second ahead of Kenyan runner Vincent Kipchumba in a dramatic sprint finish. Ethiopia's Sisay Lemma finished in third place, with a time of 2:05:45.

Four-time London Marathon winner and marathon world record holder, Eliud Kipchoge, appeared to struggle during the race. His usually calm demeanour seemed to crack, with the greatest marathon runner in the world grimacing during parts of the race. Kipchoge finished in eighth place, crossing the line one minute and eight seconds behind Kitata. This is his first marathon loss in seven years.
