The Shining star Shelley Duvall has died aged 75 of complications from diabetes. The American actress passed away at her home in Blanco, Texas on Thursday.

Dan Gilroy, her life partner since 1989, told The Hollywood Reporter the actress tragically died in her sleep. “My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us. Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley,” he said.

The couple fell in love after starring in the 1990 Disney Channel movie Mother Goose Rock ‘n’ Rhyme.

Shelley made her onscreen debut made her onscreen debut in 1970 as Suzanne Davis in Brewster McCloud. She then went on to star opposite Robin Williams as the comic-strip character Olive Oyl, in Robert Altman’s live-action adaptation of Popeye.

She appeared in seven films with the director Robert Altman, who first discovered her while she was in college in Texas. Collaborations included Thieves Like Us, Nashville and Buffalo Bill.

Shelley remains best known for her role in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980), in which she starred as Wendy Torrance, the wife of Jack Nicholson's axe-wielding maniac.

As the sad news breaks, tributes are pouring in online. "So long Shelley Duvall. What made her special was not just how versatile she was, but she was unlike any of her contemporaries. She simply made you fall in love with Olive Oyl," penned one.

Another said: "Such very sad news. Wonderful actress. May she rest in peace."

"She shined in every role she played," said one, while another wrote: "This one is sad. I remember The Shining and Popeye. She was great in both. Shelley Duvall had a distinct look. She will be missed."

"RIP Shelley Duvall, one of the most unique and expressive actors in all Hollywood history, seen here in (arguably) her greatest role as Millie Lammoreaux in 3 Women (1977)," another tribute read.

One fan said: "Her performance as Wendy in The Shining will forever be one of the greatest of all time. Rest in peace to an unequivocal legend."

The 'Annie Hall' actress took a lengthy break from acting and set up her own production company Think Entertainment in 1987. Her last acting appearance in a film was in Manna From Heaven in 2002. She later returned in 2022 after two decades away, and six years after admitting she was "very sick" with mental health problems, with a role in The Forest Hills.

Shelley, who recently celebrated her 75th birthday, was born on July 7 1949, to parents Bob and Bobbie. She was the oldest of four children and the only daughter. The star is survived by her brothers, Scott, Stewart and Shane.
