Sheryl Sandberg has spoken candidly about the judgement and trolling she faced when she announced she was dating again as a widow.

The Facebook COO lost her husband Dave Goldberg suddenly in 2015. Last month she announced her engagement to Tom Bernthal, a former NBC producer and CEO of a consulting firm.

She told The Sunday Times Magazine women 'get judged much more harshly for dating post-bereavement', adding 'when you have a death, the world doesn't give you permission to be happy'.

Sandberg also revealed that her late husband's family have been incredibly supportive as she moves forward.

In fact, her brother-in-law Rob 'was the invisible hand' behind her new relationship, introducing her to Bernthal because he thought they were 'a good match'.

And her mother-in-law who told her, shortly after Dave's death, '"you are going to get married again and I will dance at your wedding."' 'That permission was so important,' she added.

The 50-year-old mum-of-two also spoke about how the proposal happened ('it was really important to me that we planned how we were going to get engaged together') – and encouraged young women to start the conversation with their partners if marriage is important to them.

'Why, in 2020, do we still have men surprising women, and women waiting for men to ask and not bringing up marriage themselves? Why not bring it up if you want it?'
