Sheridan Smith will star alongside Strictly winner Kelvin Fletcher in a new psychological thriller.

The BAFTA-winning actor has been announced in the lead role in Channel 5 drama The Teacher, with Kelvin taking up one of his biggest roles since Emmerdale.

The provocative and challenging series will follow the story of Jenna (played by Sheridan), a state school teacher whose life falls apart after being accused of a drunken encounter with one of her pupils.

Jenna has no recollection of the night in question, and her only hope of redemption lies buried beneath a dark event in her past - which comes back to haunt her.

As well as Sheridan and Kelvin, the other cast announced so far include Samuel Bottomley (Ackley Bridge), Cecilia Noble (Small Axe), Sharon Rooney (My Mad Fat Diary, Two Doors Down), David Fleeshman (Emmerdale), and Ian Puleston-Davies (Coronation Street).

Creator Mike Benson says Sheridan was always their first choice for the lead role: "When we first developed Teacher, we had Sheridan in mind as someone who could bring empathy and complexity to the character of Jenna.

"So the fact she has agreed to come on board is hugely exciting."

The four part series was scheduled to begin filming in March. It's expected to air later this year in 2021.
