Shailene Woodley only made engagement news public to avoid tabloid leak

Shailene Woodley and her fiancé Aaron Rodgers only went public with their secret engagement to avoid having the news leak before they could share their joy with the world.

The Big Little Lies star was first reported to be dating American football ace Rodgers in February, but just days later, the quarterback shocked fans by revealing he was set to wed as he accepted the National Football League's Most Valuable Player award.

He didn't name his famous fiancée at the time, but Woodley subsequently confirmed she was to become Mrs. Aaron Rodgers and admitted it's "not new news" for the couple as the pair had been engaged for "a while".

Now, she has opened up further about keeping the whirlwind romance under wraps, admitting they were keen to celebrate their status as bride and groom-to-be in private - and the actress is glad they did, because things quickly changed once the word was out.

"When we announced that we were engaged, we wanted to do that only because we didn't want someone else to do it before we did," Woodley told The Hollywood Reporter. "And we didn't do it for months and months after we had become engaged."

"But the reaction to it was really a lot, and so we were like, 'Let's just politely decline (to talk about the relationship) for a little while and live in our little bubble,'" she added.

Woodley's comments emerge weeks after she revealed they really got to know one another at the start of their romance by moving in together "immediately".

"I have the perspective that I would have met Aaron in any context, any space in time, because I feel we were meant to be together," she told Shape magazine.

"Starting a relationship where you immediately move in with someone - because it's a pandemic and you can't just get on a plane and go back and forth on weekends - taught us a lot about each other very quickly.

"We jumped in headfirst and got some of the sticky bits out of the way early."

It's unclear when Woodley and Rodgers actually began dating, but he split from retired NASCAR driver Danica Patrick in July 2020 after a two-year romance.

The actress was last linked to rugby player Ben Volavola before going their separate ways in early 2020.
