Shadow education secretary Angela Rayner becomes a grandmother at 37

Shadow education secretary Angela Rayner has become a grandmother at the age of 37.

The MP for Ashton-under-Lyne, Droylsden and Failsworth announced the news via her Twitter account, writing: “At just before 6am today after an eventful evening, I became a grandma. Thank you to all the wonderful staff at NHS Tameside.”

She also appeared to give herself a new nickname, including the hashtag #Grangela.

Mother-of-three Ms Rayner had her first son, Ryan, at the age of 16 and said being a teenage mother “saved me”.

Earlier this year, the Shadow Education Secretary said: “I was really cross because even though getting pregnant at 16 and having no qualifications is not the best start for anyone, you have to understand that the way my life was, it actually saved me from where I could have potentially been.

Speaking at a Labour conference fringe event, she said: “I had a little person that I had to look after and I wanted to prove to everyone that I was not the scumbag they thought I was going to be, and that I could be a good mum, and that somebody was finally going to love me as much as I deserved to be loved.”

Ms Rayner’s comments came as she revealed her anger during a debate in Parliament about the rise in teenage pregnancies in some areas of the UK.

“I’m not suggesting we should be advocating it [teenage pregnancy], but to suggest that these young women are just failures and have nothing left in their lives – I was really quite cross about that,” she said.
