Following the first-ever female Doctor, Jodie Whittaker, it has been announced that our favourite Sex Education star, Ncuti Gatwa (who plays Eric Effiong), has been named the 14th Time Lord on the hit BBC TV series Doctor Who.

Last July, Jodie announced that she would be leaving her role as the 13th Doctor after five years in the role, so it was only a matter of time before a new Time Lord was revealed.

At 29-years-old, it makes Ncuti one of the youngest to play the leading role alongside the fifth Time Lord, Peter Davison, who was the same age when making his debut as well as 2009's Matt Smith who took on the role aged just 26.

And not only is this an incredible achievement in itself, but Ncuti will also be the first Black actor to play the role full-time. Back in 2020 Jo Martin paved the way for this progression and broke boundaries to become the first Black actor to play the Fugitive Doctor in a number of episodes. And as thrilled as we were for her, unfortunately the guest appearance was short-lived.

Making his first public appearance since the exciting news was announced on Sunday, Ncuti was in attendance at this year's BAFTA TV Awards ceremony, taking to the red carpet alongside Doctor Who writer Russell Davies. He will assume his role in 2023 when the new series airs.

"It was an amazing audition and the last person to audition," Davies told RadioTimes.com of his casting decision. "I thought someone else was a guaranteed hit and then in [Ncuti] came and that person will never know."

We cannot wait to watch Ncuti grow as he takes on the series 14 lead with what is sure to be a ground-breaking interpretation of such an iconic character.
