Sex Education star Emma Mackey has confirmed that she is leaving the Netflix series.

Mackey confirmed that the upcoming fourth season of the show would be her last, stating that she's "said goodbye" to her character Maeve.

Speaking to Radio Times at last night's BAFTA Film Awards ceremony, she said: "Season 5? I've just finished the fourth one last week!

"No, I don't think I'll be in season 5. I've said goodbye to Maeve."

That means that Mackey joins the list of Sex Education stars who have now quit the show. Some of them won't be appearing in season 4 at all, whilst others will return for the upcoming run of episodes, but it will similarly be their last.

Mackey has previously stated that she would only make "sporadic" appearances in season 4, as her character jets off to study in America and is therefore separate from the rest of the cast.

Just last week, she opened up about the possibility of the show ending, as well as the prospect of her own departure.

"It's just always tricky, it's different when you're playing a character that is sort of stuck in time. You know, we're playing 17-year-olds, and we're all almost 30, it is a bit weird," she said.

"It's a blessing because it is a launchpad and it is something that has given us opportunities in different ways but it's something that I want to gracefully exit from, and be happy that it exists and protect it and enjoy it in the time that it has existed in, but yeah, it needs to be left alone now I think.

"We can all move on and take what we learned from Sex Ed as well because it has been a school, quite literally, for all of us.

"It's just wonderful to have had that education and to have that baptism of fire and to have just been flung into that whole world. I think it's made us stronger."
