Selling Sunset has a new estate agent in town: Emma Hernan. The 29-year-old from Boston, Massachusetts, has worked at The Oppenheim Group for years, selling high end properties alongside owning her own food company. This month, she takes centre stage in season four.
Here's what happened when we caught up with her to chat all things Selling Sunset, drama and why she's opening up her personal life to let viewers in.
Cosmopolitan: Hey Emma! Please tell us a bit about who you are.
Emmak: I grew up in a small beach town in Boston, Massachusetts, and fell in love with Los Angeles during a trip while I was at high school. My family's background is in the food industry, and after I spent time investing in stocks from a young age, I eventually gave money to my parents to help fund the company. Once you start investing in different start-ups and stocks, it's the perfect transition into real estate. I bought my first property with Jason [Oppenheim] as my broker in 2017, and then got my real estate licence after that.
How different is being on Selling Sunset to just working at The Oppenheim Group?
Obviously there are cameras and crew, but besides that, this is our real life. People forget that a lot of the things that we deal with, even the drama, is our real life. These are real feelings and real relationships. Women tend to be competitive; that's why you bond with the people that want you to succeed. But you know, of course, there's drama every once in a while.
I've always been an extremely private person with my business and my relationships, so before I joined the show, it was something that I really had to weigh up. I ultimately made the decision to do it, and I don't look back because I hope that my story inspires people and helps them to connect with me.
You and Christine fall out in season four because you once dated the same man. Can you give us more details?
I mean, with girls in general... If there's a guy or their relationship involved, there's going to be some feelings... You'll definitely see it play out on camera. I stay true to who I am and I definitely try to take the high road with everything in life. And I mean, you'll definitely see that play out.. Just pay very close attention to the facts. I can't give too much away, but let's just say you guys will be having some popcorn with that interaction.
Did you see Chrishell and Jason's romance coming?
I kind of suspected it before [they announced it] and you'll definitely see that play out on camera. But seeing Jason with Chrishell is probably one of the sweetest things I've ever seen in my entire life. I have never seen him so happy. I've never seen his smile so big, and when she walks into the room, his whole face lights up. She feels the exact same way; hearing her talk about Jason just really nice. It genuinely warms my heart and gives me, you know, couple goals.
They really are the perfect match. And I think you know what's so special about them, too, is that Jason just looks at her in such a special way where he really, truly admires her. And I think that's one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle when you're trying to have a happy, healthy, you know, really sustainable relationship. So she really is a piece of the puzzle
What can we expect from season four?
It's definitely the juiciest [season so far,] and the properties are bigger and better than ever. Reality TV is a very interesting experience; we are putting our real lives out there for the world to see and we have cameras filming real things we're dealing with. It's definitely made me a lot closer with the other agents.
You'll get to see my personal life - my mum actually comes on the show, and my relationships play out on screen. You get to see really my whole life.
What's your fellow new agent, Vanessa Villela, like?
Vanessa's a sweetheart, we joined at the same time. She works really hard. I don't see her as often as the other girls, just because she's super busy and she lives a little bit further away.
