With The Great British Bake Off returning to our screens this month, we realised there’s a lot we don’t know about GBBO judge and owner of the most sparkling blue eyes and glistening silver hair, Paul Hollywood. We know he’s a hell of a baker - his bread recipes in particular are legendary - but what else do we know about him? Let’s take a look, shall we?

Paul Hollywood's bread recipes are a thing of beauty

Paul is best known for his bread skillz, and he tends to take the lead during Bread Week on Bake Off; with his savoury and sweet bread recipes usually being given to the amateur bakers to try their hand at during the Technical Challenge.

Paul Hollywood comes from a baking background

Paul’s father was a baker, but despite working in one of his dad’s bakeries during school holidays, when his dad approached him about working full time with him, Paul originally said no as he was working towards becoming a sculptor by attending art school. But once he was offered a fairly decent wage by his father, he agreed.

After starting work in the family bakeries, by his early 20s, he was managing a whole bakery all by himself.

So, this explains where he gets all his brilliant bread recipes from, and why he’s managed to make such an impressive career out of bread – it's all thanks to his dad.

Paul Hollywood has released a load of cookbooks

Paul has released several cookbooks. His books include Paul Hollywood’s Bread, How To Bake and 100 Great Breads, to name but a few.

Paul Hollywood's favourite sandwich is a little unusual

As you can imagine, this guy has strong opinions when it comes to all things bread-based, including his favourite sandwich. Paul's favourite sanger is a bacon butty, but made in a slightly unusual manner. "My favourite sandwich is a bacon buttie," he told What's On TV. "Warburton’s sliced white, bacon – then sit on it to make it thin!"

Rightttttttttttttttt.

Paul Hollywood looked pretty different when he was young

In case you were wondering what Paul looked like when he was starting out his baking career, he recently shared a photo of himself on Instagram from back in the day, and is it just us, or does it feel like this is where Noel Fielding takes is hairspiration from?
