The Chanel 2024/25 Métiers d'art show took place this evening in the historic city of Hangzhou, China, with the West Lake at nightfall serving as this year's sweeping backdrop. The collection was inspired by the antique Coromandel screens and Chinese lacquer work that the Maison's founder loved to surround herself with. One screen in particular, which originally hung on her study walls at her apartment at 31 rue Cambon in Paris, was set against the backdrop of Hangzhou's West Lake, making it a fitting location for a collection dedicated to the allure of dreams and travel to be revealed.

The show revisited the signature Chanel stylistic vocabulary through the savoir-faire of the Maisons d'art at le19m. Featured in the collection were sweeping coats, tweeds, satin and velvet, with delicate floral embroidery, straight-cut jackets belted at the waist, and tuxedo jackets lined with white satin (made by Paloma) and worn over pleated skirts, culottes, wrap skirts, and cropped trousers galore. The travel-focused theme was reflected in the accessories styling as well, with models carrying travel bags and vanity cases. The Coromondel screen motifs even appeared in jumpsuits that were paired under t-shirts, cardigans, shirts, dresses, and tweed knits, for a masterclass in elegant layering. And of course, it wouldn't be a Chanel show without floral and camellia motifs, which were embroidered by Lesage.

For footwear, the models were styled in thigh-high boots and pointed slippers in black patent and leather, as well as mid-calf boots made by Massaro—similar to those favored by Gabrielle Chanel herself. Medallions and cuffs made by Goossens added to the sumptuousness of the visuals, referencing flowers and fruits—and the ancient prunus from China—while hats by Maison Michel, beanies, and scarves completed the sensuous and romantic vision.

The pleating and flounces throughout the collection were crafted by Lemarié and Lognon, as if summoning the viewer into the cushiony dream world—complete with cloud-shaped pearl necklaces, fleeces, and pillow handbags—as only Chanel could conjure.
