But fans believe that there is more than meets the eye with Joe Goldberg, and that his character runs has suspicious parallels to Gossip Girl’s Dan Humphrey.

*Spoilers*

The conspiracy theory is rooted in Joe Goldberg and Dan Humphrey actually being the same person, and that Joe is Dan in disguise. Fans have suggested that the story of Dan, in Gossip Girl, is actually the backstory of Joe.

The finale of Gossip Girl revealed that Dan had been stalking his friends and was the writer of the blog that outed the characters and their secrets.

Sound like someone you know? The theory then suggests that Joe’s character is a way for Dan to live out the darker side of himself, a step further than just a revealing blog.

Penn Badgley himself even commented saying, “dialogue between these two shows, that are very different, but at the same time, there’s this very similar vein."

Season 3 of You gives us a deeper look into the past of Joe Goldberg and reveals that Joe actually comes from a poor family background, while we know the Gossip Girl blogger also felt like a bit of an outsider.

The character likeness is without a doubt present, but could the similarity really be that intentional? Probably not, but it's fun to theorise.
