Scott Mills shared concerns over hosting Zoe Ball’s BBC Radio 2 show before mysterious absence
Scott Mills, who is currently filling in for DJ Zoe Ball on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show, previously voiced his concerns about hosting a breakfast radio programme. In the final episode of Celebrity Race Around the World, which was broadcast on Wednesday 18 September and filmed earlier this year, Scott told his husband Sam Vaughan after a very early pre-dawn start during the final leg of the race: “Remind me not to do the breakfast show.”
Scott hasn’t heeded his own advice, and is currently having to get up very early to host the Radio 2 Breakfast Show as he is filling in for regular DJ Zoe Ball, who has been absent from her show for the past five weeks. The BBC have yet to state why 53 year old Zoe is away, and Scott and fellow DJ Gaby Roslin have been filling in since 8 August.

During the final episode of Celebrity Race Across the World, Scott and Sam competed against Kelly Brook and her husband Jeremy, Ted Lasso actor Kola Bokinni and his cousin Mary Ellen and broadcaster Jeff Brazier and his son Freddie. The series ended with a tense race up a volcano, and Scott and Sam were the winners. “It’s been exhilarating, it’s been tough, but it’s been worth it,” Scott said.
“Oh my god, we did it!” He added when they reached the top and signed the book to say they had arrived. “When you open up that book and there are no other names in it, there is no feeling like it. We won!” Meanwhile, his husband Sam blamed the tears in his eyes on the cold weather.
Kola and Mary Ellen came second a couple of hours later, and were followed by the next day by Jeff and Freddie, with Kelly and Jeremy coming last, but still thrilled that they were able to finish. When the teams met up at the end, Scott added that it felt weird, and he didn’t want to go back to real life, joking: “It’s all downhill from now on.”
Scott will continue to fill in for Zoe on the breakfast show for the rest of the week, and can finally talk about his Race Across the World win now the episode has been broadcast. However, fans of Zoe Ball are hoping she will return to the radio show soon, and have taken to social media to comment on her absence.
“What has happened to Zoe Ball? She’s been off the radio for 5 weeks in total - no mention of her whatsoever in the last few weeks. I hope she’s ok,” wrote one listener, while another added: “I hope #zoeball is okay.”
