Scotland's new 'danger to life' snow warning to hit 27 areas this weekend - full list

It seems like Scotland can't catch a break from wintry weather, as a new warning has been issued for disruptive rain and snow to hit this weekend.

Scots are being urged to stay cautious as a yellow weather alert for snow and rain is now in place which spans from as far as Talmine in the Highlands all the way down to Stoke-on-Trent in England. It comes after two separate alerts were published by the national forecaster on Wednesday (November 20), the first being for snow and second for ice.

The new warning is in place from 4am on Saturday, November 23 until 9am on Sunday, November 24. It states that "heavy" snow is on the cards, which is to be followed by a widespread, rapid thaw, which may bring some disruption.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Mike Silverstone said: “Winter hazards will gradually diminish through the weekend, though they will hold on longest in northern Scotland. Substantial snowfall is expected across much of northern England and Scotland for a time on Saturday, mainly over higher ground.”

In this time, outbreaks of rain will spread north, followed by a spell of snow in the same area, with up to 10cm expected in certain areas, before turning back to rain. Temporary snow accumulations of 10-20 cm are possible on ground above 150m, with perhaps as much as 20-40 cm above 300m, but snow will become more confined to higher areas as the warning proceeds.

Those in affected areas are being warned of possible, flooding, risk of "danger to life" from fast flowing melted snow and floodwater, and travel delays ranging from stranded vehicles to cancelled air and rail transport.

Meanwhile, an ice warning is also in place later on Wednesday, November 20 from 4pm to 10am on Thursday, November 21 across Ayr, Greenock, Aberdeen, Strathclyde and lower parts of the Highlands. Icy stretches are expected to form on untreated surfaces during this time due freezing temperatures, sleet and snow showers.

This followed a separate snow alert that is currently in place from from 10am today until 12pm on Thursday, November 21, across many of the affected areas in this new alert.

Frequent snow showers are likely to be paired with hail, with mainland areas likely to see up to 10cm. Over high ground, above about 300 metres, 15 to 20 cm could accumulate in this time period.
