From Cosmopolitan

Just a few months after the first series of Russian Doll landed on Netflix, the streamer confirmed that Natasha Lyonne's wild, gritty show will be returning for a second instalment. That was back in June 2019 and now almost two years on, we finally have some details about the upcoming series, and they're very exciting details too.

Here's everything we know about Russian Doll season 2.

What's Russian Doll S2 going to be about?

As you'll remember the first series of Russian Doll followed Natasha Lyonne's character Nadia as she celebrates her 36th birthday before being killed chasing down her missing cat. But in this Groundhog Day tale, Nadia wakes up after her death to find herself at the start of the night all over again, ad infinitum.

The problem with this genius story is that it's hard to imagine how you do something new and different for a second series. But according to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lyonne originally pitched the show to have three seasons, and she has lots of ideas for the second instalment.

"I think where Russian Doll has been successful is that there's a very clear sense of character in Nadia so that you can have very high-concept things happen to her, but they always feel earned," she said.

"They're backed by some sort of lived experience so they don't feel like they're floating in space or completely in the realm of sci-fi," she continued. "From that perspective, I have some big ideas, and I think this show will continue to work so long as that journey continues to be interesting and worth watching and new. I want to be learning in real time along with her and along with our audience."

Who has been cast in Russian Doll S2?

Of course, Lyonne will be back to play Nadia, and in new and very exciting news we now know that Schitt's Creek star Annie Murphy will be starring alongside her. We don't have any details about her character yet we can't wait to see a Lyonne x Murphy duo.

We also don't know yet if Alan (played by Charlie Barnett) who was a huge part of series one will return for a second season, but we're crossing our fingers.

Do we have a trailer for Russian Doll S2?

Production for the show only got underway at the end of February so sadly we don't have a trailer just yet, and it's probably going to be a little while before we do.

When is Russian Doll S2 going to be released?

This is where it gets complicated. Filming for series 2 was due to start in May 2020, but like so many of our favourite shows, it was put on hold as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. This means that we can't really be certain when the Russian Doll S2 will be released, although it's unlikely to be before late 2021 / early 2022.
