Sarah Millican has asserted her successful career as a comedian and “not a model” in a brilliant response to the trolls who tore apart her looks last year.

The 38-year-old, who admits to having “pretty low self-esteem”, wore a John Lewis, floral print dress on the Baftas red carpet.

But on returning home, she was met with a deluge of Twitter posts criticising her appearance to such a personal extent that she cried.

“It was like a pin to my excitable red balloon,” she wrote in Radio Times. “I was fat and ugly as per usual. My dress was destroyed by the masses.

“I looked like a nana, my dress was disgusting, was it made out of curtains, why was I wearing black shoes with it?”

Millican added that she shunned designer shops because, as size 18 to 20, she “does not count as a woman to them”.

The English comedian concluded her response by revealing her plan to wear the exact same dress again next time she appears at the event.

To make the point that it doesn’t matter what she wears, "with the added fun of answering the red carpet question: ‘Where did you get your dress? with ‘Oh, it’s just last year’s, pet’.”
