Jada Pinkett Smith supported husband Will at the Oscars in 2007, after he was nominated for an accolade for his role in 2006 biographical drama The Pursuit of Happyness.

The emotional film depicts a struggling single father desperately trying keep himself, and his child - played by Smith's real-life son Jaden - afloat.

But, while we all clocked Jada at the event, many of us won't have known the real story behind the celebrity family's attendance. As it turns out, the only reason Jaden Smith made it to the Oscars, was because of Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer alumni Gellar shared a video clip to Instagram this week, showing Jada discussing what she had used to bribe her son to attend the event.

The clip depicted Smith in an interview on the Live with Kelly and Ryan show saying: 'I've never been so nervous in my life. I've been in the business for a while but having my son at the Academy Awards and he was presenting, and he had all these stipulations.'

In the footage, which Smith has since shared to her own account, it shows the 50-year-old following up with: 'He was like, "Look, if I don't get to meet Sarah Michelle Gellar - he told me straight up - if I don't get to meet Buffy, I'm not going to the Oscars,' she said with a wide smile.

Gellar's post is hilariously accompanied by the caption: 'Obviously updating my resume - ability to bribe people into attending Oscar’s. #specialskills'

The mum-of-two, who will always be remembered for her kick-ass supernatural character in the iconic 90s series, also shared a photo of herself with Jada, Will and Jaden at a Vanity Fair Oscars after-party.

The photo, with Smith in a regal metallic gold gown and Gellar in a flared mini dress, shows Jaden, who was nine at the time, dressed in a smart suit that echoed dad Will's.

As for Jaden meeting the Buffy star following the 79th Academy Awards ceremony, Smith said in the video clip: 'I had to call Sarah! I said, "Sarah please, will you please at the Vanity Fair party... can Jaden just say hello to you?" And she was so wonderful, so sweet about it.'

Smith also revealed her son was well behaved during the awards ceremony. 'He sat there at the Oscars very quiet. He was cooperating,' she said.

In recent years, fellow mother-of-two Smith, who also shares 21-year-old daughter Willow with her husband, has opened up about difficult times with Jaden.

On one occasion, she addressed the concept of 'mum shaming,' when speaking to Oprah in 2020.

Referring to when her son, now 23, wore a skirt for a Louis Vuitton campaign, the Matrix star said: 'I got shamed a lot for Willow. But Jaden was—that was hardcore.'

And during an episode of Red Table Talk in 2018, Smith, who's been married to Will since 1997, with whom she is known for having an open relationship with, said: 'Jaden and Willow have always been different. They were born that way. A lot of people think that it came from my rearing, but no, it just so happened that that’s how they came into the world and I had to get in order. I had to be open enough to receive it.'
