After multiple public apologies from her and a lot of crying on Made In Chelsea for him, Sam Thompson and Zara McDermott are officially back together.

In a new interview, 28-year-old Sam opened up about the reconciliation for the first time, following the 21-year-old former Love Island star cheating on him last year.

News of their split came to light in early September, with reports saying they ended things following a trip to Mykonos at the end of July. It later emerged Zara had cheated on him when she appeared on X Factor: Celebrity.

After it became public knowledge, Zara penned an open letter to Sam, saying she had made a "huge mistake" and was "hugely selfish and immature". She wrote on Instagram:

"A huge mistake I made a year ago has recently come to light and I want to face this head on. I don't condone being unfaithful and I made a huge mistake at a time in my life where I was hugely selfish and immature. I believe I have learnt so much from my mistake. I want to apologise to my Sam for everything I have put him through, for the pain, the embarrassment, the anger and the hurt. All I want to do is make this right and I think the least he deserves is me being honest with myself and all of you. I love you Sam, forever."

Since then, fans speculated that they had reconciled when Zara was spotted leaving Sam's house in November, and the pair re-followed each other on Instagram.

And now, Sam has spoken out about his decision to get back with the Love Island star, insisting he thinks forgiveness is the only way to heal."I believe in forgiveness," he told MailOnline.

"I understand the context – and I think in any walk of life you can't move forward unless you forgive. Forgiveness allows you to heal. You can only heal when you forgive the other person and get over that.

"I would definitely say no matter what you should always try to forgive and you'll feel better in yourself – it's f***ing easier said than done but you've got to strive for that."

Sam continued, "The people I care about caring about me will know we're all human. We are all human and you can't grow and evolve and be a better person without making mistakes along the way. For that to be shown on TV, it almost humanises you and makes you more relatable."

It's official: the pair are back in action.
