Leeds United interim manager Sam Allardyce is ready to confront his players over an aspect of their game that he doesn’t want to see anymore, despite taking some positives from their draw with Newcastle on Saturday.

Allardyce’s side are still in the relegation zone after drawing 2-2 with Newcastle at Elland Road. Considering their opponents are in the top four, it was a respectable result. Full-backs Luke Ayling and Rasmus Kristensen scored either side of two penalties by Callum Wilson.

Leeds also missed a penalty of their own when Nick Pope denied Patrick Bamford from the spot in another highlight of an enthralling encounter, which later saw Junior Firpo sent off for the hosts.

For Allardyce, it is a problem that his side conceded two penalties after also giving one away (which was missed by Ilkay Gundogan) against Manchester City in their previous fixture.

Therefore, Allardyce has admitted – under something of a chuckle – that he will have to give his players another telling off.

Speaking to BT Sport, Allardyce said: “I’m glad to say I’m disappointed it’s only a draw because it could have easily been a win for us.

“It’s our fault we haven’t won it today. We have to stop giving penalties away because we’ve given one away last week as well and I’ve been talking about staying on your feet all week.

“Obviously I don’t like it when they ignore me, so they’ll get told off next week, believe you me.

“Because had we stayed on our feet today, I think we might have won this game.”

Allardyce ‘very satisfied’ with draw

That said, the 68-year-old was proud of the performance his players put in, especially in other aspects of their defending.

He summarised: “I’m very, very satisfied with what they’ve done and how they’ve applied themselves.

“Obviously there’s lots of areas we could look at and say there’s room for improvement again, but I think that we didn’t get dispirited even though we made life extremely difficult for ourselves.

“We have missed a penalty and given two penalties away and drawn 2-2.

“In the space of a few minutes in the first half when we get a second penalty to go 2-0 up, I think I’d be here saying what a great three points that was today, but we missed it, and then they go right the other end and we give a silly penalty away, 1-1.

“But then we made sure that we stayed in the game, and as we stayed in the game and tried to get opportunities as we could, it looked like it was going to pan out from then.

“And then obviously another penalty, whether there’s a push or not, I’m not that sure. I mean there’s contact, whether it’s enough to give it against him and not give a penalty, only the referee can decide that. He decided against it, so he came over and had a look at it.

“And again a really good response, a very good goal for 2-2 and then if we don’t want to make our life more difficult we will do it and get one of our players sent off.

“And after seeing the last seven or eight minutes out, which we did superbly well, I thought overall our defending was magnificent today.

“When you consider where Newcastle are today, third in the league, and we played Manchester City last week, we are moving in the right direction now.”

Leeds now have just two games remaining in their fight for Premier League survival.
