We all know by now that salads have hidden calories. I’m talking dressings here, a sprinkling of cheese there. But still, we’ve always thought of them as the preferable option to a carb-laden baguette, so occasionally we try to put our health first and opt for some greens at lunch.

However, your veggie-packed salad from the local sandwich shop might just be the worst option - not just in terms of calories, but fat, too. According to Women’s Health, your colourful, Insta-worthy lunch contains more calories than a crusty sandwich - and quite frankly, we’re shocked.

Depressingly, as we often consider this the healthy option, Pret is one of the worst culprits. Their Tuna Nicoise salad is advertised as 191 calories - but that’s before you add the dressing. Adding that extra pot means an added 232 calories and 23.8g of fat on top of your initial salad.

Decisions, decisions… which new Veggie Box is your favourite?

Women’s Health also notes that Eats’ Houmous and Falafel Mezze Salad has 371 calories undressed, but the dressing adds almost 500 calories.

The information on dressing often isn’t declared on packaging, meaning you have to go to the website to find out more. And I, for one, am far too lazy to do that, so I dread to think how many accidental calories I’ve been consuming.

On the plus side, it’s worth remembering that salads do often contain more nutritionally great things than your average baguette, with plenty of nutrients, protein and calcium. So don’t beat yourself up about it too much - balance is always key.
