The temperature is descending by the day and that means one thing: it is time, friends, to really start dressing. We're talking big coats, lots of layers, longer hemlines and slouchy knitted fabrications. It's all going to get very comfy, very quickly. But there’s another sartorial staple that’s set to take centre stage this season, on the far less roomy and far more intimidating end of the menswear spectrum, that's enjoyed an early endorsement from Ryan Gosling in a surprisingly wet Milan: the leather jacket.

After the weather forecast required a last-minute venue change indoors, the Gucci show was the location for the actor’s first public outing since a Barbie-fied summer. It's where he unveiled a new ‘tasche and soul patch, while wearing a head-to-toe charcoal (minus the white tee) Gucci look. But it's the leather that we're now lusting for, marking the start of a dress-code reset. The seasons have changed, the 42-year-old is no longer playing dress-up as a plastic doll, and the time for darker colour palettes, non-breathable cow hides and simple, fuss-free silhouettes is now. It couldn't have come quick enough.

Who?

Well before SAG-AFTRA strikes stopped any form of movie talk, Gosling spent the summer embracing Kenergy with an array of pastel and neon looks during the Barbie press tour. He may have convinced more men to dress a bit brighter, but his day to day style is universally more wearable than Ken's retina-blinding hues. Think: slim-fit bottoms, denim jackets and breezy shirts.

Where?

During Milan Fashion Week, where Gucci’s new creative director, Sabato De Sarno, debuted his first womenswear collection.

What’s he wearing?

A celebrity attending a fashion show is expected to turn up wearing the brand itself – if you hadn’t already noticed, check out the Italian fashion house’s signature horse-bit detailing on his leather jacket and loafers. But this minimalist look (as well as the collection) signified De Sarno’s new vision. Michele's extravagant prints have been replaced with understated looks that hark back to the brand’s vision from the nineties.

How do I recreate it?

It’ll be a few months until this collection hits stores (and we’ll have to wait until the January shows to see De Sarno’s full menswear offering) but there’s no reason as to why you can’t pull on a leather before then. Gucci already has some understated styles to choose from, while Belstaff, Mr P. and Rag & Bone have some more wallet-friendly options. Then just throw on a white t-shirt, some tailored trousers and loafers in the same shade of the jacket to complete the look.

Mr G opts for a Harrington-esque design, but if that’s not your cup of tea, our guide has a full breakdown of what leather silhouette will best suit you.

Mistakes to avoid?

You can’t really go wrong here, but as the actor shows, there’s something undeniably cool about just sticking to a monochrome palette. But if you do want to inject some colour, stick to more earthy tones to be in line with the season. Now is not the time to be experimenting with fuchsias or lime greens, go for moss or chocolate hues to switch up the look.
