RuPaul's Drag Race star Chi Chi Devayne has died at age 34, her family confirmed in a statement on Instagram on Thursday this week. The news of her passing comes just days after she told fans she had been re-admitted to hospital following complications with her health in July.
The family of Louisiana-born drag star Chi Chi Devayne (the stage name of Zavion Davenport), shared a post on Devayne's instagram account late last night, containing the following statement:
"It is with tremendous sorrow that my family and I announce the passing of my beloved son, Zavion Michael Davenport, the world renowned 'Chi Chi DeVayne,'" the post read. The family said plans for final arrangements were still forthcoming and shared "his final words to his family and fans, 'Never give up!'"
Earlier this week, Devayne took to her Instagram Stories to tell followers she had been admitted to hospital. Showing herself lying in a hospital bed on Saturday morning, Devayne told fans, "Keep me in your prayers. I'll be back soon."
Devayne was hospitalised in July of this year after suffering from high blood pressure and kidney failure. She was eventually discharged a month later after having catheters surgically installed to her heart and kidneys and undergoing dialysis treatment.
Devayne was a successful entertainer who competed on the eighth season of RuPaul's Drag Race in 2016, and the third season of All Stars. Her cause of death has not been confirmed, however reports suggest that her recent hospitalisation was due to pneumonia.
Numerous drag stars have been posting tributes to Devayne on social media.
Fellow Drag Race contestant Jujubee wrote, "Thank you for sharing your gift with us. We will miss you. Your light will continue to shine. 🙏🏽"
While Peppermint posted a picture of her with Devayne alongside the caption, "So much joy so much light. Such I caring, empathetic and beautiful soul. I love you Chi Chi"
