According to new research, men should favour running and weight lifting over cycling in order to look after their bones.

The study, which took place at the University of Mississippi, measured the bone density of men and women between the ages of 35 and 50. Results found that 28% of males showed precursor signs of osteoporosis, compared to 26% of women. These results are surprising, as previous studies have concluded that women are more likely to suffer from the condition than men.

Researchers concluded that many of the males in the study were keen cyclists, but according to research, this non-weight-bearing form of exercise does not help improve bone density.

During the study, the 173 participants were scanned at the femoral hip and lumbar spine, while being exposed to a light dose of radiation. This helps to work out someone’s bone mineral density (BMD). Scientists believe BMD peaks at around 30, which means young adults who do not form strong bones are at an increased risk of osteoporosis later in life.

Dr Martha Bass who led the research told The Telegraph, “We typically associate loss of bone mineral density with post-menopausal women, but our findings showed elevated risk in younger men.

“Almost all participants who were found to have osteopenia were surprised and I think this is a more prevalent issue than anyone expected."

Bass concluded that the best way to maintain BMD is through weight-bearing exercises, like running, walking and jumping. Moderate weight lifting is also thought to be beneficial, as is a balanced diet. In fact, Bass believes weight-bearing is more important than calcium when it comes to maintaining bone health, concluding “calcium plays a larger role when bones are still developing. After that, the body begins to rely on weight-bearing exercises to keep bones strong. It really does boil down to use it or lose it.”
