Together, they both start to ask the same questions about Amy, a young female employee who died in suspicious circumstances 10 years earlier after a company party.

But when another shocking death happens on the company premises, Sam is unable to ignore what has been going on under her nose any longer as she is pulled in different directions by her job, her responsibilities to the victims, and her own family.

Who stars in Rules of the Game?

WARNING: Embargoed for publication until 00:00:01 on 04/01/2022 - Programme Name: Rules of the Game - TX: n/a - Episode: Rules of the Game - Ep2 (No. 2) - Picture Shows: (L-R) Gareth (KIERAN BEW), Anita (ALISON STEADMAN), Owen (BEN BATT), Sam (MAXINE PEAKE) - (C) The Forge - Photographer: Matt Squire

Starring in the lead role as Sam is Maxine Peake.

She said: "It encompasses a lot about acceptable behaviour over the decades, what was seen as acceptable then and what is now. My character is at the centre of this and for me, it’s about whether she is implicit or a victim of this whole dynamic."

Appearing alongside Peake is Rakhee Thakrar, who plays HR director Maya.

Thakrar said: "I feel the story is relevant because these abuses of power are still going on and what we’re seeing now are public bodies helping voices come forward anonymously. I don’t think we had as much licence to do that before and now it’s giving power to the people who were too scared to come out."

The cast also includes Alison Steadman, Zoe Tapper, Ben Batt and Kieran Bew.

Rules of the Game begins tonight (Tuesday) on BBC One at 9pm.
