We love holidays, but we seriously hate the insect bites that come along with them.

Luckily, it turns out an inexpensive moisturiser could be just what we need in order to fend off those pesky biters – at least, that's what the Royal Marines think.

Apparently, the soldiers swear by Avon's Skin So Soft dry oil spray to prevent insect bites.

The Royal Marines along the west coast of Scotland, where they regularly suffered attacks from midges. However, according to The Scotsman, they came across the spray in 2005.

'It's not official kit but nothing works better and the Marines are buying it themselves because the midges are so bad up there,' said Neil Smith, a Royal Navy spokesman at HMS Clyde, near Helensburgh.

The product's Amazon page is also full of glowing reviews stating how effective it is in repelling mosquitoes and other bugs.

This is thought to be down to the citronella oil contained in the product. For £4.99, it seems worth a try!
