Houston Rockets basketball player Kevin Porter Jr. was arrested Monday morning after an alleged assault involving his girlfriend at a Manhattan hotel overnight, PEOPLE confirms.

Porter Jr., 23, is facing two felony charges for assault and strangulation, a New York City police spokesperson says.

Porter Jr. is still in custody and has been transferred for booking while awaiting an arraignment.

ABC News reports the victim to be Porter Jr.’s girlfriend and former WNBA star Kysre Gondrezick. Local NBC 4 reports Gondrezick, 26, was taken to a local hospital with a broken bone and bruising.

A NYPD spokesperson tells PEOPLE the victim had laceration on the right side of her face and was taken to the hospital in stable condition. Police allege Porter Jr. “struck her multiple times about the body and placed his hands around her neck.”

NBC 4 reports that Porter Jr.’s alleged assault began after he got locked out of his hotel room and that hotel security was called. The hotel’s security allegedly called police soon after the incident ended.

Porter Jr., a Seattle, Wash., native, played college basketball for the University of Southern California and was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2019. However, he was soon traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he played his first two seasons in the NBA.

Porter was later dealt to the Rockets in early 2021, where he’s since played guard for Houston.

The former first-round draft pick was previously arrested in 2020, according to ABC News. He faced gun and marijuana charges in Ohio after a single-car crash in November 2020, but later had the charges against him dropped, according to the outlet.
